Rail company seeks engineers of the future

Network Rail is looking for its engineers of the future and is actively encouraging more women to sign up for one of its apprenticeships.

The company has 200 places available on its three-year course, on which participants will study towards NVQ3s in Railway Engineering and ILM Level 3s in First Line Management.

According to Network Rail, passenger numbers have grown by more than 40 per cent in the past decade and are expected to double by 2034 and, as a result, widespread improvements works are necessary.

Network Rail said: "In the next two years alone, major reinvestment projects will be delivered. We'll need to sustain this rapid level of growth and investment to keep up with increasing passenger demand."

In an attempt to appeal to these young engineers, the rail operator has launched a Facebook page to advertise its apprenticeship scheme.

Rail engineering got a significant boost last month when the government gave the go-ahead for the HS2 rail project.
