400kv and 275kv transmission substations contract awarded

The contract for the design, construction and commissioning of 400kv and 275kv transmission substations for the National Grid has been awarded.

A consortium comprising Morgan Sindall, ABB and Atkins called Electricity Alliance Central has been given a five-year contract extension running to 2016, with individual contracts being awarded during this time based upon project scope, geographical considerations, continual delivery and cost assessment.

The original contract was a £2.8 billion programme to upgrade and develop the electricity transmission network across England and Wales and Morgan Sindall says it is delighted that this work will continue.

Paul Smith, chief executive of Morgan Sindall Group, said: "We are excited by this opportunity … to deliver complex substation projects which play a vital role in delivering high voltage transmission infrastructure in the Midlands and north-west England."

Up to 2021, the National Grid is planning to invest some £20 billion in its gas and electricity transmission infrastructure of which around £650 million has been awarded to the joint venture.
